Strong winds of war call for erecting new walls

The winds of war on the eastern front push Russia’s neighbors to adopt extraordinary measures. And on the borders walls and barriers that, only a few years ago, no one would have thought of, are born. But the war in Ukraine has accelerated everything. Estonia is pushing to close work on the wall on the south-eastern front, while Poland has finished building the fence on the border with Belarus, a faithful ally for the Kremlin.

In the Republic, the second lot is being completed to protect the border shared with Russia and allow border guards to reach even the most remote places through the construction of paths and bridges that can also be traveled with motorized vehicles.

Although many border areas can only be patrolled on foot and bodies of water crossed using narrow pedestrian bridges, once work on this new infrastructure is completed, border guards will be able to move around using off-road vehicles or larger vehicles. For example, three bridges were built over the Piusa River for the needs of the defense forces, the last of which was wide enough to be crossed by vehicles. The entire development work of the eastern border is expected to cost EUR 105 million, of which more than EUR 30 million has been spent.

Poland has completed its wall on the border with Belarus, a powerful fence on which electronic motion sensors and security cameras have been installed. The height of the steel fence with barbed wire is 5 meters, the total length is 187 kilometers. The total cost of the project was approximately 321 million.
